A Short Note on Tools
Why the tool you already understand usually wins.
Every few months a new tool arrives promising to replace three of the ones I already run. Sometimes it does. More often it replaces the parts I understood well and leaves the parts I did not.
The test I keep coming back to is simple: when this breaks at an inconvenient hour, will I be able to reason about it? A tool I can hold in my head beats a faster one I cannot.
That is not an argument against new tools. It is an argument for paying the learning cost deliberately, while nothing is on fire, rather than discovering it in the middle of an incident.
